Quick answer: Good news: most big US airlines now treat a board bag like any other checked bag. No special oversize fee. You still pay the normal bag fee, plus overweight if your bag is heavy, and every airline has its own limits on length, weight and how many sticks fit in one bag. Check the official page before you book.

Airline by airline
Alaska Airlines
Alaska counts your board bag as a standard checked bag. No special item fee. Boards up to 10'5" nose to tail, bag up to 50 lb. Flying the E175? Then it's 9'7" max. You can bring more than one board in the same bag, so the quiver comes too.

Delta Air Lines
On Delta your board is a standard checked bag, depending on your fare and route. Go over 50 lb and you pay overweight. The bag has to be 115 linear inches or less: length plus width plus height. Up to 2 boards per bag. Heads up: Delta Connection flights don't take boards over 72 inches.
Hawaiian Airlines
Hawaiian runs the same surfboard policy as Alaska. Hawaii residents hopping between the islands can check a board free as part of their bag allowance.
JetBlue
JetBlue counts your board as a standard checked bag, no oversize fee. Over 50 lb, you pay overweight, and nothing over 99 lb flies. One board per bag only. JetBlue won't take boards to some destinations, including Bermuda, Haiti, Peru, Port of Spain, Santo Domingo and Santiago (Dominican Republic).
Southwest Airlines
Southwest counts your board as a standard checked bag, no oversize fee. Boards over 100 lb don't fly. Pull your fins before you check in. They require it.
United Airlines
United counts your board as a standard checked bag. Flying to or from California? No oversize fee for up to 2 board bags. Anywhere else, including connections through California, a board bag over 62 inches pays the oversize fee. Boards up to 115 inches long (92 on United Express) and under 100 lb. Take the fins out or pad them, and use a board bag.
How to keep your surfboard fees low
- Double up. Where the airline allows it, put two sticks in one bag (Delta takes up to 2, Alaska and Hawaiian several). One bag, one fee.
- Weigh it at home. Most overweight fees kick in above 50 lb. Wax, wetsuit and leash add up fast.
- Measure the bag, not just the board. Delta counts length + width + height.
- Check the route, not just the airline. United only waives the oversize fee on California flights.
- Book the bag online if your airline lets you, and screenshot the policy page in case anyone at check-in argues.

FAQ
Do airlines charge extra for surfboards?
On the six US airlines in this guide, your board counts as a standard checked bag. You pay the normal bag fee, plus overweight if the bag is heavy. United still charges oversize on some routes outside California.
Which airline is best for flying with a surfboard?
Depends on your route and how many boards you're bringing. Alaska and Hawaiian let you pack several boards in one bag with no special item fee. Delta takes up to 2. JetBlue only one.
How many surfboards can I put in one bag?
Delta: up to 2. Alaska and Hawaiian: several. JetBlue: 1. Southwest and United don't give a number on their surfboard pages.
What is the maximum surfboard length on a plane?
Alaska and Hawaiian: 10'5" (9'7" on the E175). United: 115 inches (92 on United Express). Delta: 115 linear inches for the whole bag.
Do I need to remove the fins?
Southwest requires it. United asks you to remove or pad them. Honestly, pull them on every airline.
Can I take a surfboard as carry on?
No. Boards are way too long for the cabin, so they have to be checked.
How often do these rules change?
Often. That's why every row here links to the airline's own page and shows the date we checked it.
